Assignment 1A Progress:

During the first week, we were required to visit Popular to purchase newspapers or magazines in preparation for Assignment 1 in Week 2. I purchased two different types of magazines: one with a fashion theme and another with a government theme that contained more text. This allowed me to experiment with different themes and explore various possibilities for my artwork. Besides that, I also looked for papers with different textures and found a condominium advertisement from a shopping mall flyer. Its texture differed from the magazines I purchased, which could help create a more interesting visual outcome.

I then started creating my collage by researching abstract artworks from different designers on Pinterest for inspiration, as I had not yet developed clear ideas for my three pre-compositions. After gathering some inspiration, I began arranging and layering the images without applying glue. This allowed me to move and rearrange the elements freely until I found a composition that I was satisfied with.

Feedbacks for consultation:

Pre-composition #1

  • The huge lips, the central human figure, the concentric circular lines, and the newspaper background are all centered along a strict vertical and radial axis. so it should be  Symmetrical / Radial Balance.
  • Placing the main subject dead-center is Central/Formal Alignment, not Rule of Thirds. Rule of Thirds relies on placing key elements along the grid intersection lines (off-center).
  • The giant lips/mouth shape takes up over $60\%$ of the canvas and has a bold, warm tone, making it visually dominate the page first. The small figure sitting inside the lip curve is actually a nested focal point (secondary or focal anchor).
  • Add a subtle shadow cutout (using gray paper or dark newspaper scrap) underneath the lower lip and behind the upper lip to create a 3D "open mouth / sanctuary" effect.
  • Crop "Scanned with CamScanner" watermark at the bottom of the artwork frame when you submit.

Pre-composition #2

  • Re-crop the final image to remove the "Scanned with CamScanner" watermark at the bottom before submitting.

Pre-composition #3

  • The composition relies more on Diagonal/S-Curve Flow (stretching from bottom-left to top-right) rather than a 3x3 Rule of Thirds grid. The main focal points cut directly through the center on an angle.
  • The surrounding watches feel scattered randomly without a unified visual orbit or path. Some watches (e.g., the silver watch at the top center and the turquoise watch at the bottom right) collide with the outer image border.Arrange the floating watches along a soft, curved spiral or arc (following the curve of the planet/moon on the right) so they lead the viewer's eye around the canvas naturally.
