3. Final design work from Task 3

Figure 1.1: Wong Li Wei_All in Your Eyes_Task 3

200 words rationale:

  • The decisions made in your design: I included a large eye, introducing a psychologist's perspective concept that was not presented in the original designer's work. I adjusted the patterns to follow the flow of the hair. Furthermore, I positioned the character to face forward instead of sideways to showcase her smile. Lastly, I rearranged the title, placing 'All In' at the top and 'Your Eyes' at the bottom of the design.
  • The meaning/purpose of the design: It represents a psychologist's perspective during a session, highlighting their ability to perceive hidden emotions beneath a patient’s smile. It encourages open expression of feelings, emphasizing that speaking out can bring relief compared to bottling up emotions.
  • The design principles that are employed to create the design: The design emphasizes a large central eye, using repeated patterns to create repetition in forming the girl's hair. The principle of proximity is applied through closely grouped patterns, which also generate a sense of movement from top to bottom. The colour of background and figure provide colour contrast. Hierarchy is established by framing the eye and figure with the title, while proportion is evident in the oversized eye, which is larger than the girl. Unity is achieved as the patterned hair blends seamlessly into the figure. Principle of closure allows the audience to mentally complete the title.

4. Reflection

• What did I enjoy the most?

In this module, I enjoyed Task 2 the most, as I had the opportunity to explore ways to improve the original design work I had chosen. This allowed me to experiment with the arrangement of elements, design principles, and color schemes. Moreover, I also enjoyed the visual analysis process, as it helped me gain a deeper understanding of the concept and design principles involved in the selected design. This step is crucial before sketching, as it provides more ideas and directions to consider during the sketching stage.

• What did I not enjoy the most?

As usual, the only part I do not enjoy is the period after consultation. At times, my work gets rejected, which results in having to redo it multiple times. However, I also see this as a valuable moment for self-reflection. After each consultation, I can assess my progress, identify areas where I am lacking, and determine what needs improvement. Ultimately, this process helps me enhance my work and achieve higher marks in the module.

• What have I learnt about myself through this module?

Through this module, I have learned that I should take more time and have patience when exploring ideas. Sometimes, my initial concepts are too raw, leading to less interesting outcomes. The more I explore and refine my ideas, the better my final work turns out, as I have more options to choose from. Additionally, during Task 1, I discovered that I enjoy collecting data, organizing it systematically, and presenting it neatly in a blog. I believe that a well-structured blog post with detailed information enhances readability and helps the audience understand the content more easily.

• What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

One significant change in my learning journey is that I have spent more time drawing digitally. Since I usually prefer traditional drawing, working digitally was initially challenging for me. However, because my selected design work was better suited for digital presentation, I dedicated time to exploring Procreate. Although I found it complicated, especially when I accidentally drew elements on the same layer, but still I managed to complete my final outcome successfully. On the other hand, one aspect of my learning journey that has remained unchanged is my prior knowledge of design principles. Since I had already learned these concepts during my Foundation course, I felt that Task 1 covered familiar content rather than introducing entirely new ideas.

• What are my aspirations?

My aspiration is to apply what I have learned in this module to future assignments and fashion garment designs. I believe that incorporating design principles into fashion can make garments more visually appealing and dynamic. Lastly, I hope that my future self will take more time to explore ideas during the sketching stage to achieve better and more refined outcomes.
