2. Recap Task 3 brief

Description: After the visual analysis, you will now create a work of design, based by the idea you have proposed in Task 2. You are expected to apply your knowledge of design principles in your idea development and final design. You may use any medium and/or materials, except for full photography, that are suitable to convey your final visual message.

Requirements:

  • A recap of Task 3 brief.
  • Select one of the 3 ideas you proposed in Task 2.
  • Develop it through colour exploration, composition, typeface, positioning, etc., with design principles in mind.
  • Finalise your idea.
  • Create your final design in A4 size, JPEG format in at least 300dpi pixel size. Label the design as <Your Name_Title of Design_Task 3>.
  • Write a 200-word rationale explaining/defending: i) the decisions made in your design, ii.) the meaning/purpose of the design and iii) the design principles that are employed to create the design.
  • Include feedback from your lecturer.

3. Assignment outcome

Selected sketch: Sketch 1

Figure 1.1: Sketch 1 from Task 2.

This sketch represents a psychologist's perspective, where they understand what their patient is thinking, even without the patient expressing it verbally. Deep blue and muddy brown symbolize confusion and introspection, reflecting historical art tones. Wavy lines above the head will develop into full patterns, creating a more abstract effect.

Design work before 1st consultation:

Figure 1.2: Design work before 1st consultation.

Things that need improvement:

- Add margins.
- Use a brighter background color.
- Change the title to 'All in Your Eyes.'
- Add more details to the eyes.

Examples that tutor demonstrated:

Figure 1.3: Example 1.
Figure 1.4: Example 2.

Design work before 2nd consultation:

Figure 1.5: Design work before 2nd consultation.

Things that need improvement:

- Slightly misalignment.
- Not centered typography.
- Tear duct need to improve.

Design work before 3rd consultation:

Figure 1.6: Design work before 3rd consultation.
Figure 1.7: Alignment adjustment.

Things that need improvement:

- Reduce the spherical shading of the tear duct.

Design work before 4th consultation:

Final design work:

200 words rationale:

  • The decisions made in your design: I included a large eye, introducing a psychologist's perspective concept that was not presented in the original designer's work. I adjusted the patterns to follow the flow of the hair. Furthermore, I positioned the character to face forward instead of sideways to showcase her smile. Lastly, I rearranged the title, placing 'All In' at the top and 'Your Eyes' at the bottom of the design.
  • The meaning/purpose of the design: It represents a psychologist's perspective during a session, highlighting their ability to perceive hidden emotions beneath a patient’s smile. It encourages open expression of feelings, emphasizing that speaking out can bring relief compared to bottling up emotions.

  • The design principles that are employed to create the design: The design emphasizes a large central eye, using repeated patterns to create repetition in forming the girl's hair. The principle of proximity is applied through closely grouped patterns, which also generate a sense of movement from top to bottom. The colour of background and figure provide colour contrast. Hierarchy is established by framing the eye and figure with the title, while proportion is evident in the oversized eye, which is larger than the girl. Unity is achieved as the patterned hair blends seamlessly into the figure. Principle of closure allows the audience to mentally complete the title.

4. Feedback

Week 5

Mr. Anwar began briefing this assignment this week, so we should begin working on it now so that we can show him our progress next week.

Week 6

Mr. Anwar encouraged me to make further improvements to my current design work, as it doesn't feel like a complete design yet.

Changes suggested by Mr. Anwar:

  • Add margins
  • Use a brighter tone for the background color
  • Change the title to 'All in Your Eyes'
  • Add more details to the eyes

Week 7

Everything is fine. It would be better if the title were less hidden compared to the current design, as other audiences might not understand what the title is referring to.
