Week 1 (Task 01 - Experimentation On Media - Hatching Pen):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

To start the class this week, Mr. Jasmi briefed us on the assignment flow for this module. He also recommended the types of materials we need to purchase for upcoming assignments, such as colour pencils for Assignment 2 and marker pens for Assignment 3. This allows us to buy them early online and be better prepared.

Next, to help us avoid procrastination, Mr. Jasmi demonstrated how to use Artline pens for hatching in drawings. He taught us how to create different tones using a 0.2 Artline pen by layering the lines. After the demonstration, we all began doing trial-and-error exercises.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

This week, we were tasked with completing a trial-and-error version of Assignment 1 using a chosen editorial photograph. We only needed to finish 30% of the drawing to receive a stamp of approval from Mr. Jasmi.

Overall, I felt excited because it has been a long time since I worked on any traditional drawing. Moreover, this is my first time trying hatching techniques in artwork. I was glad to practice and improve my skills by experimenting with the trial version.

Week 2 (Task 01 - Experimentation On Media - Hatching Pen):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

This week, we had to show Mr. Jasmi the trial-and-error version of Assignment 1 in order to get an approval stamp from him. Once approved, we could proceed with the final drawing on the illustration board. Therefore, throughout the entire class, we focused on our individual tasks, continuing the drawing and hatching process on the illustration board.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Our mission this week was to complete the final illustration board for Assignment 1, as the submission deadline is next week. I need to manage my time well, since completing the drawing may take up to three days, especially because my chosen editorial photograph is detailed and requires more effort. For that reason, I plan to finish my homework for other modules first so that I can dedicate the remaining time solely to this assignment before the deadline.

Overall, I feel happy because I managed to complete Assignment 1 within two weeks. Now that the first assignment is done, I'm even more excited for the next one, which involves colouring with coloured pencils which is my favourite technique. I hope I can work efficiently and produce a good result, even though I know that colouring with pencils is time-consuming due to the need for careful blending and layering.

Week 3 (Task 01 - Experimentation On Media - Hatching Pen):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

This week, we were informed that Week 3 will be the final week to complete Assignment 1. However, students who have already finished Assignment 1 and selected their editorial photography for Assignment 2 can begin researching on Pinterest. Assignment 2 will focus on the coloured pencil technique.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Since I completed Assignment 1 last week and have already chosen the editorial photograph I want to draw, I had no new tasks this week based on the class progress. To stay ahead and speed up my work for next week, I decided to trace and draw my selected editorial photograph on A3 paper in advance.

Chosen picture reference:

Overall, this week felt quite relaxed because I had no outstanding work, as my progress is ahead of schedule. I'm feeling excited for next week when we officially begin Assignment 2, especially because I enjoy using coloured pencil techniques for drawing.

Week 4 (Task 02 - Experimentation On Media - Colour Pencil):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

This week marks the beginning of Assignment 2. Mr. Jasmi started the class with a demonstration on how to blend colours using coloured pencils. Since I’ve participated in many drawing and colouring classes during primary and high school, I’m already familiar with colouring techniques, which makes this assignment easier for me.

One interesting technique I learned from Mr. Jasmi’s demonstration was how to create the colour black without using a black coloured pencil. Instead, he used a combination of different coloured pencils and blended them together to achieve a black tone. We are required to apply this technique in Assignment 2.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

This week’s task was to complete a trial-and-error version of Assignment 2. I managed to complete 30% of my drawing during class, which was enough to receive the approval stamp from Mr. Jasmi. As a result, I had no additional homework after class since I completed the required portion during class hours.

Overall, I felt relaxed this week because I had no tasks left for this module after class. This allowed me to start tracing the drawing onto the illustration board to continue working on the assignment. However, I also feel a bit anxious, knowing that I might get bored during the process. The editorial photograph I chose has a lot of intricate details, which might take a long time to complete. In my opinion, the longer a drawing takes, the more likely I am to procrastinate before finishing it.

Week 5 (Task 02 - Experimentation On Media - Colour Pencil):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

This week, after everyone received their approval stamp from Mr. Jasmi, we all continued to colour the final version on the illustration board in order to meet the deadline.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Everyone had to begin their actual version on the illustration board this week. Since there were also other assignments happening at the same time, such as the OPPO competition. I decided to complete this task within the week so I could focus on my other modules afterward. I spent almost four days completing the entire drawing because it contained so many details.

However, there were also some advantages to working on this piece. For example, since most of the colour tones used were shades of green, I was able to colour those areas all at once. The most challenging part was colouring the skin tones of my character. I didn’t have the exact colours from the reference picture, so I had to blend different shades of brown and red. As a result, some parts of the skin ended up having slightly different but still similar tones.

Overall, I feel happy because I managed to complete the entire drawing within a week. That means I don’t have to worry or feel stressed about this module’s assignment for now. While working on this piece, I also had some flashbacks of my childhood days when I used to attend drawing and colouring tuition classes. It reminded me of how long it has been since I stopped drawing and colouring which is an interest I once thought about giving up. I’m grateful that I chose to continue pursuing it, because every time I complete a drawing, I always feel proud of myself for staying committed and finishing it.

Week 6 (Task 02 - Experimentation On Media - Colour Pencil):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

This week is still focused on Assignment 2. However, since the deadline for the Fashion Project 1 module is tight and approaching quickly, Mr. Jasmi allowed us to work on that module’s assignment during this class’s hours. Of course, we still needed to manage our time and ensure that progress on Assignment 2 for this module continued as well.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Since I already completed Assignment 2 last week, I didn’t have any new tasks for this module during this week. It was a relaxing opportunity for me to focus on assignments from other modules, especially because we haven’t been briefed on Assignment 3 yet.

Overall, I felt relaxed this week, as I had finished Assignment 2 earlier than most of my classmates. This gave me extra time to complete the kebaya look for my other module by managing my time efficiently across assignments. However, I also started to feel a bit anxious about the next assignment, since we’ll be using the marker pen technique for colouring which is a technique I’m not very familiar with.

Week 7 (Task 02 - Experimentation On Media - Colour Pencil):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

Mr. Jasmi briefed us about this week’s tasks. We were allowed to continue focusing on the kebaya project. At the same time, we also needed to complete Assignment 2, as there are still some students who haven’t finished it yet.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

This week, there’s no task for me since I already completed my work two weeks ago. However, I can start researching which editorial sports-themed photography I want to choose to draw and colour for Assignment 3, as we will begin that assignment next week.

Chosen picture reference:

Overall, I’m still feeling relaxed this week since there are no new tasks for this module yet. Hence, I hope I can use this time to complete my other assignments as soon as possible. Last but not least, I also went to purchase marker pens from ArtFriend. I bought a box of markers that included the colour tones Sir wanted us to have, with as many colours as possible. I hope the brand I bought is of good quality, as I believe that poor-quality materials may affect the outcome of the artwork, since different brands produce different material qualities.

Week 8 (Task 03 - Experimentation On Media - Marker Pen):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

This week, Mr. Jasmi began the class by briefing us on Assignment 3. We were instructed to choose our own favourite reference editorial photography related to sports, as we are starting this assignment now. He also asked our classmate, Rey, to print out the drawing he had done so that everyone could use it for practice. This allowed us to learn through trial and error and see what improvements could be made by observing each other’s work.

In addition, Mr. Jasmi demonstrated the technique of using marker pens by layering colours multiple times. He also taught us how to use grey tones to shade the darker areas of our drawings, which was interesting because I initially thought we would be using darker colours for shading instead of grey. After the demonstration, he let all of us practice on the printed paper by following the steps he had shown, so he could observe and identify what we needed to improve in our techniques.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Our task this week was to complete the trial-and-error practice. Since we had already delayed the submission deadline for the previous assignment, we now need to spend less time on this one to avoid any further delays in progress.

This week, I felt nervous and a bit frustrated, as marker pen techniques are the ones I feel least confident using. There’s only one chance for each drawing if I make a mistake, I have to start all over again. However, I was surprised to find that my technique turned out better than I expected during the practice trial. This made the experience feel new and interesting, and it’s a technique I definitely want to explore and practice more.

Week 9  (Task 03 - Experimentation On Media - Marker Pen):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

To start the class this week, Mr. Jasmi gathered us to brief us on what to do. He informed us that we must complete Assignment 3 by next week, as the submission deadline has been extended to Week 10. However, most of us haven’t started the trial and error process yet, because we spent most of our time working on the Kebaya project, which delayed our progress. Unfortunately, during this week’s class, no one brought any materials for this module. Therefore, sir allowed us to continue working on our Kebaya project instead, as the deadline for that project is approaching.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

We need to complete both the trial and error for Assignment 3.

Since we only have one week to complete it, it feels quite rushed and challenging for me, especially because I’m not confident in using marker pens for colouring. That’s why I have to make sure my technique is good and efficient, so I can complete the drawing within a short amount of time. During the trial and error process, I was quite confused about how to mix colours and create light-to-dark tones. Grey only works as a dark tone for certain colours, so I wasn’t sure what would look right. However, since this is just a trial, I gave it a try to see what works and what doesn’t, so I won’t repeat the same mistakes in the final piece.

Overall, my experience this week was a bit confusing and stressful, since this is my first time doing a marker pen drawing which I find quite challenging. I was unsure how to blend the colours from light to dark, especially because the technique requires layering. As a result, most of my marker pens ran out of ink. Luckily, I had some substitute colours that I could use for certain parts. One of the most difficult parts was making sure I didn’t colour outside the lines. Since the tip of the marker is large, I had to be extra patient and careful, especially for the finer details. If I rushed, I might end up making the same mistakes I made during practice. Lastly, I really hope sir will approve my final drawing. Since it’s done with marker pen, we only get one chance, as if we make a mistake, we’ll have to redo the whole thing.

Week 10  (Task 03 - Experimentation On Media - Marker Pen):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

This week, Mr. Jasmi started the class as usual by briefing us on our task, which is to complete the final version of our marker pen drawing on either photocopy paper or marker paper. After the briefing, he allowed us to continue working independently on both our trial and final versions.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Our mission this week is to complete the final version of Assignment 3.

For my trial and error drawing, I initially used yellow tones. However, I found it difficult to achieve the right shades of nude or brown to create effective tonal contrast. Because of this, I decided to switch to a different photograph which one that featured red tones instead. I felt more confident working with red shades for the marker pen drawing.

Once I made the switch, the overall process went much more smoothly. I was able to blend the colors more effectively and didn’t need much guidance from Mr. Jasmi. As a result, I was able to complete most of the work independently in my room, and much faster than before.

Overall, this week’s experience was positive. I felt comfortable and confident with the new photograph I chose for my final drawing in Assignment 3. I no longer had to worry about failing or redoing the work. Plus, now that Assignment 3 is done, we only have one final assignment left in this module. I’m excited for that because once everything is completed, it means semester break is just around the corner!

Week 11:

LESSON OF THE WEEK

There are no classes this week, as the OPPO fashion show will be held on Tuesday, which clashes with the Fashion Illustration module’s class hours.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Since we have already completed the submission for Assignment 3 and our lecturer hasn’t introduced Assignment 4 yet, we have no tasks for this week. However, we can start doing some research on which picture we want to draw for Assignment 4 as preparation for next week.

I felt quite relaxed this week since there were no tasks to complete. Now, I’m just waiting for next week to begin my Assignment 4 journey.

Week 12 (Final Project: MIX MEDIA/ FINAL GARMENT - FASHION PROJECT 1: ‘KEBAYA REINVENTED’ (DRY & WET MEDIA) ):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

To start this week's class, sir had us do a lucky draw to determine the sequence for our upcoming presentation. Luckily, I drew number 18. It’s both a good and bad thing. Good because my presentation is scheduled on the first day, so I can finish the semester earlier, but bad because I might need to stay very late that day, as 21 students will be presenting each day.

After that, sir conducted a demonstration on how to use the wash and wet watercolor technique, since most of us aren't familiar with it. Normally, we only use the standard watercolor method, but the wash and wet technique requires the paint to be very watery, and frequent use of tissue to blot the color and excess water. To blend the tones, we use only water to lighten the colors gradually. Additionally, sir taught us how to incorporate mixed media into this assignment. Mixed media can help smooth out the figure's outlines or darken tones. Basically, to do what watercolor alone can't achieve. This was really helpful for me, especially since my wash and wet watercolor technique isn't that strong yet.

After the demonstration, sir allowed us to start experimenting during class through trial and error. Link of the video:

MISSION OF THE WEEK

This week’s task was to complete the trial and error stage, which I managed to finish during class hours. During the watercolor process, I found it quite challenging since I had never used the wash and wet technique before. It was difficult for me to create both dark and light tones within a single color, and I also added too much water while painting, which affected the quality of the paper. Since my initial outcome wasn’t satisfactory, I asked for help from sir. He guided me step-by-step, which helped clarify my understanding of the technique, such as how to mix darker tones of a color and how to use a different brush effectively. Thanks to his help, the outcome turned out much better in the end.

To improve the overall look of the watercolor area, I used colored pencils to shade all the outer lines and edges to give the piece a cleaner finish. I also used colored pencils to draw and color the texture manipulation on my kebaya, as the details were small and delicate. If I had used watercolor for this part, the brushstrokes might have ruined it due to the lack of control.

Fortunately, sir approved my outcome and asked me to treat the trial and error piece as my final drawing. This means I don’t have to redo it, which is definitely a relief and a good outcome for me.

Hence, this is my final outcome for this final assignment.

Overall, I learned a new watercolor technique this week, which I can apply in different ways to future drawings. Also, since I already completed 30% of the drawing during class, I’m confident I can finish everything by the end of this week. Even though sir only expected us to complete 30% of the trial and error, I target myself to finish it within this week since I’ve learned how to apply the technique properly and can continue coloring independently without further guidance.

Week 13 (Final Project: MIX MEDIA/ FINAL GARMENT - FASHION PROJECT 1: ‘KEBAYA REINVENTED’ (DRY & WET MEDIA) ):

LESSON OF THE WEEK

During this week’s class hours, sir allowed us to continue working on our final project, which is also the Dry and Wet Media assignment, as the submission date is next week. Therefore, all of us spent the entire class completing the assignment, since sir had already conducted a demonstration for it last week.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Since I already completed this final assignment during Week 12, there is no more task left for me to do in this module.

Overall, this week has been quite relaxed and chill for me, as I finished everything for this module before Week 14. This gave me more time to rest and focus on completing finals for my other modules. I feel grateful and proud of myself for finishing everything early and perfectly, avoiding any last-minute rushing. In my opinion, it's always better to complete tasks ahead of time rather than procrastinate. When I finish early, I still have time to make final adjustments to improve the outcome. But if I leave things until the last minute, everything becomes rushed and I might not be able to produce my best work.

Week 14:

LESSON OF THE WEEK

There were no classes this week, as Tuesday was designated for our Semester 2 presentation day.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

Since I completed all my assignments last week, I can finally relax and enjoy my holiday. However, the only task left is to complete my e-blog posts in a detailed and organized manner.

This week has been quite relaxed and chill for me, as I’ve already completed everything required for this module. I can now begin preparing for the holiday break.

Throughout this module’s journey, I felt like I reconnected with a younger version of myself, back when I used to attend drawing lessons as a child. That’s why I was already quite comfortable with using colour pencils. However, techniques like hatching with Artline pens, using marker pens, and working with watercolour were new to me. This module gave me the opportunity to try these for the first time, and now I’ve grown to enjoy using hatching and marker pen techniques, not just colour pencils anymore.

This module didn’t feel stressful to me; instead, it became a calming and enjoyable experience. It gave me moments to relax and focus on colouring, especially when I was feeling overwhelmed during the process of making my kebaya.

A list of my final outcome picture:

Assignment 1.

Assignment 2.
Assignment 3.
Assignment 4.

That's all for my Fashion Illustration blogpost.
